indeed.  Have you tried that.  I killed pulse now.  I removed all of
gnome and pulse and it now works.  I will need to set up a VM to test
your well thought out proposition.  There has to be a way of telling
pusle or udev to let go of the sound system for non-desktop applications.

This is why I hated systemd and this stuff still comes back and bites me
on the ass all the time.
