mount -t udf /dev/sdb /mnt/ mount: /mnt/sdb: unknown filesystem type 'udf'. $ mount -t auto /dev/sdb /mnt/sdb mount: /mnt/sdb: unknown filesystem type 'udf'. I used all the usual tricks of the trade, the drive should be okay. Kernel is linux 5.15.5.artix1-1 on an otherwise vanilla Artix linux system. udftools 2.3-1 are installed. Am I lacking any modules / config settings? Does the shipped kernel support UDF by default? On other distros when you update your kernel, the old kernel does not get removed, which means all the kernel modules and other kernel files are still on the disk. So reboot isn't required right away. However on artix/arch when the new kernel is installed the old one is instantly removed. This means the old kernel modules are deleted. However the kernel running in RAM is still the old kernel and can't use the new kernel's modules and doesn't have the old modules available either. So on artix/arch it is always required to reboot after a kernel update otherwise random stuff may not work. For example docker stops working till reboot after a kernel update. ?-- Chris Cromer Artix Linux Developer? So I would like to have the discussion on the mailing list. -------------------- I understand developers prefer Artix to be command line based as it is easier to maintain and more stable system as compared to GUIs. The reason I am suggesting is that I see that Artix deserves and should be the main and #1 choice Linux distro. Users in general are not geeks, and even if they are experienced with Linux, all would prefer a distro that just runs after install. Which is not the case with Artix. As I install Artix I have to, add, customize repos, add yay to get chromium browser... you know what I'm talking about. Why not make a release that just runs after installation. I am not suggesting to include LibreOffice during installation, I'd prefer it the way it is - just the OS and a DE - PLUS repos, configs.... AND pamac. So a user have an Artix that just works out of the box, and he has a way to install whatever he wants through pamac. Sorry, I'm not interfering with the developers business, they are doing a great job. BUT I am saying this because I care about Artix and want to see it the "default" distro for most users like Ubuntu, MX... I again assure you I understand developers point of view, but with all due respect, I believe they are doing this great Artix for USERS not for developers. and users are just the average Joe who just wants to install a system that just runs out of the box and browse the internet, listen to music, watch videos and photos, a dad and mom and even a grand dad and a grand mom. Someone told me there are other distros that are beginner/user friendly and they can go for it! I've been there (latest on MX) but I see Artix is much better, better performance and better community. We can have unofficial release(s) that attracts the average Joe and grandma. I don't understand why developers don't care about them or don't care about Artix being the default distro in place of MX, Ubuntu? I repeat, I am not criticizing developers or blaming them for anything, I'll just be happy to see Artix is #1. I hope nobody takes this personal. It is opensource after all where developers hears (I won't say listen) to users to guide them or give hints. Thank you for your patience and please accept and convey my high appreciation to you, moderators, developers and everybody working on this amazing Artix and this amazing community. Nothing personal in any way. It is all about me caring about Artix and who is behind it. Thanks. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... That being said, our ISOs cover a large gamut of user linux skills: base for advanced, various DEs for intermediate and community editions for beginners. The community ISOs install a fully customized, complete system, ready for work. Package management GUI helpers are included (pamac/octopi) along with command-line ones (trizen, I think). They also come preconfigured with our bonus [universe] repo and Arch repositories. What you are doing is called a partial upgrade and can break your system completely. Please read: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/System_maintenance#Partial_upgrades_are_unsupported In best case scenario, some random package doesn't work anymore but nothing catastrophic. A bit worse, you might not be able to boot and have to chroot in to fix something. Even worse case would be pacman stops working and you can't upgrade/downgrade anything anymore. In worst possible case scenario something really important like glib for example gets fucked up and you have to reinstall your distro completely because you can't even chroot into it anymore. The correct solution when this happens is don't update anything until it gets fixed on our end after reporting it.
