Ohh, as usual, your help is much appreciated.  Yes "alsactl store" does work.  And after manual execution of "alsactl store", "alsactl restore" does work as well.  Actually I no longer get the boot message.  But that means, on boot I get the state manually stored, not the final alsa state before boot.

I believe the issue is the same as the poweroff and reset hanging.  I think the issue is that when shutting down and hanging, the laptop never gets to store the alsa state...  What do you think?
